Since then the group has built a fearsome reputation as a live act as well as a catalogue of top quality CDs, many of which are on their second and third reprints. I joined the band as drummer and backing vocalist in 2006. With a background in rock, swing and gospel music, I've found a perfect home playing the Blues.

Adi Wood

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 297px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mkdZ0jAFiJo/TTuE92oVtVI/AAAAAAAABZY/wCVyp0f3py0/s400/CD-Montage.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565187962717975890" />

Metro Drummer

As a drummer of thirty odd years, I know my one weakness.

My sense of tempo sucks.

Actually, its not too bad but can easily be pulled of course by the rest of the band.

Therefore it sucks. I should be able to hold veryone in check or, at least be able to move with the rogue player and slowly pull him back into line.

The solution is to practice rhythms and rudiments with a metronome. I've a Korg which is very nice and my Vic Firth practice pad to let loose on. Its been many years since I've practiced regularly so that itself will be a challenge. Mojo Hand gigs two or three times a week, so its easy for me to try out a feel and, if it doesn't really work, I can go back to the drawing board and think again. Such is my working relationship with guitarist Al Sansome, that if he prefers another feel to the one I've picked, its not problem for me to change to what he wants instead.

With this in mind I've been giving some thought to the swing numbers I play with Mojo Hand. These days I find myself gravitating towards three distinct approaches:

I can play the feel using brushes on the snare drum only, which sounds fantastic at low volume.

Country numbers are best played with a two beat feel, with the swing rhythm replacing the quater-note on the hi-hat.

For full on swing numbers, I really like the classic swing back shuffle. The swing rhythm is driven along by backbeats on the 'a' note of the triplet, rather than the two and four.

Edged Sound

Whether played with sticks or with the foot, Paiste sound edge hi-hats are much more articulate than regular cymbals. They had a huge impact on my playing this weekend, giving me a bigger hi-hat sound, both open and closed, and more cutting foot-played notes. These foot-played notes really helped bring out the backbeat when playing with brushes, which I did a lot of at the Stamford Arms, Groby on Sunday. The landlady had asked us to keep the first set low key, so we chose to play all the swing numbers in our set which of course benefitted from the use of brushes.

Sound Success

Proper Paiste sound edge bottom cymcals are superior to the Meinl I tried in the past. I replied that there are all sorts of rythms that can be used, and that listening to the music would inform the feel. The trick was to settle on a pattern and play it consistently with authority. That way would create a strong foundation, or groove. As long at the subdivision didn't clash with or disrupt the flow of the song any beat, from rock to authentic calypso, would do the job. My musical tastes have matured sufficiently to revel in both the top notch guest stars (Clapton's Further On Up The Road stands out for me) and The Bands eclectic musicianship - I learnt a lot about singing and drumming from Levon Helm.

A Higher Priority

... than sound edge hi-hats (sigh) is the insurance on my drums. I've ever read.
Whilst enjoying a coffee with Maria in the Loros book shop - I think it was the Loros shop, there's two charity bookshops opposite each other on Queens Road and I can't remember which belongs to which, anyway the one with the coffee shop - when I spotted Who on Earth is Tom Baker, the autobiography of my favourite Doctor (Who). I'd read the unsubstantial Matt Smith biography - more interesting to see how a writer had padded out a ten page life story to a full-length book by filling it with reviews from blogs I'd never heard of - and was the mood for something with smaller type and leading to get my teeth into. Spot the typesetter.
The Introduction - an overview.
1997. Baker endures a near disastrous plane journey to New Zealand to shoot an advert for pensions in a substantially let out Doctor Who costume. He is waited on by Anthony Hopkins in an expensive resteraunt and has his bill paid for by a mysterious benefactor, who turns out to be Piers Baker, his son who he'd not seen, presumably, since birth.
In a few pages you know Baker's relationship to acting, actors, Doctor Who, women and offspring.
Worth buying for the introduction alone!

Foundation

These days I think more and more about the lessons I had with drummer Bob Nutt, before I got my first kit and before I joined my first band. Next year we should have a new CD recorded at the Swan and Rushes. November's Blues Guitar Hero gig proved very popular and a second gig is planned for nearly next year.

I've enjoyed using my Ludwig drums and Paiste cymbals which I'm refining at every gig - tuning, set up and playing style. Next year I'll keep a watchful eye on my bags and hardware - if anything could do with being upgraded in the next few years, its those. Gibraltar hardware and Protection Racket bags are top of my list. I'm considering using the LP lil' ridge rider cowbell for rhumba/latin numbers, but don't want to add anything else to this versatile four drum/three cymbal set-up.

A better quality straight microphone stand would be good too. The only problem is I find the tempo really hard to control. So I've taken a leaf out of WS Holland's book (Johnny Cash's drummer) and started using what I call the Country Beat instead. This is a fast swing rhythm with the bass drum played two beat style instead of four on the floor. Tempo is now rock solid and it helps the songs I use it on - I Got a Woman, Big Boss Man, Call Me the Breeze, Mama Don't Allow - to swing a little too.

Coated Heads Rule

I Predict a Riot

After a quiet night at the Bradgate on Friday, last night at the Hind was a riot! Its Wikipaedia Time.
The words are from the Canadian French song 'Alouette' - 'Skylark'. The lyrics of Promise This read like a children's bedtime song with allussions to If I Die Before I Wake. Contrasts to the heavy beat of the song.

Eighth-note Fills

Spent twenty minutes writing out eighth-note rock fills. My Ludwigs and Paiste 2002s are great and the current set of hotch-potch hardware usable. An enthusiastic crowd, coupled with a terrific sound (thanks Gaz) added up to a afternoon to remember. I got a bit carried away at the end of Walking Blues and the lads compared me to local skins demon Damon Claridge of The Drugstore Cowboys - high praise indeed. Or should I say, Giles Hedley's fans and followers. Hopefully we reached some new ears along the way. I played the first song, My Babe, with my Vic Firth Live Wire brushes then switched to sticks for the rest. The wires were fine for that particular number, but sticks suited the other songs, sound-wise.
I had a chance to compare notes with fellow Ludwig fan Damon from The Tailshakers. He commented on how good the kit sounded, especially the bass drum. He was surprised that it was a relatively cheap kit and one of those mass produced in China. I'm glad I opted not to have a mic on the bass drum and kept things simple and acoustic.
I'd never heard of Giles Hedley but after two hours non-stop delta blues on guitar and harmonicas, I knew why he's called a legend. To imitate the sound of a euphonium, he even played two harmonicas at the same time, one with his mouth, the other with his nose! The Tailshakers then got up for another hour's impromtue music. Maria and I finally called time at half twelve!

The Verdict on the Nova sticks

Everything was fine until I started playing my 2002 Medium cymbal. They've been my axe of choice for a long time now but after lots of hard gigging and hard playing they're wearing thin and usually don't survive Big Boss Man. Hah! I can get Vic Firths from Rock Factory for eight pounds (no postage) which is great. However, I could get Novas for a fiver. Why would I want to change? According to online sources, they're made by Vic Firth and apart from a few blemishes are the same stick. They're available in the same sizes, including nylon tips, which I find much more hard wearing than wood. I may also give 2Bs a try as they are a heavier stick and 5Bs seem light to me now.

The Hind once again

You know, I can't remember if its Mojo Hand tonight or the Blues Demons at The Hind... not that it really matters to me. I've just finished assembling enough big shooters and rokkits to equip six thirty strong mobs, twelve to be exact. This should give the boys the kind of heavy weapons fire which can pelt the enemy whilst advancing. It will slow the advance a little as the mobs will be unable to run but my opponent will have to keep his head down! I've also assembled the Nobs from Black Reach - they only have slugga and choppas, a 10pt upgrade. Nobs with power fists are pricy at 35pts each and I'd rather spend my points on better guns.
As well as 1200pt games, we're talking about playing 600pt lunchtime games. Pertwee (3rd) sings of the Slithy Toves in The Silurians and McCoy (7th) confounds Light with talk of Baddersnatchers and Slithy Toves in Ghostlight. I mostly played two beats and train beats with the odd triplet figure thrown in the give the swing effect. They even traded fours with me - excellent! Everyone congratulated us on the sound... Apart from some signature syncopated drum beats, such as Honky Tonk Woman, Walking the Dog and Mustang Sally, all the songs we play feature this solid bass drum pattern. All apart from the songs on which I play the Train beat, and I'm even practicing that FOTF.

Why FOTF? It has its own integrity. No nonsense, driving, it can be played under any bass line. It also allows me to give a consistent feel to all the songs. The beat can also be phrased to fit both swing and rock/shuffle beats, feathered on one and stomped on the other.

Final Tour Date

Last date of the County Tour is at the Stamford Arms, Groby. To remember that simple beats played well are the way forward. That your carefully tuned drums, especially the 20" power bass drum, really do sound great. If not, a satisfying career playing music may be stifled by too many negative thoughts. It helps when you know your band is looking out for you.
I've been using a quarter-note triplet ride pattern on Bright Lights Big City but as Al pointed out last night, it doesn't fit with the medley we play with Baby what You want Me to Do. I use it to showcase one of the ideas I've been exploring over the last few months - playing a groove common-time then changing the backbeats to create a half-time or double-time feel. The song is a shuffle, played four on the floor and cross-stick. I play the verses half-time, the harmonica solos common-time, then double-time to push the guitar solos.

Five

Am still considering using the ten inch drum that came with my Ludwig kit... need to find a ten inch Controlled Sound head, I think I've still got one knocking around.

New Poster

This weekend's gigs are all 'local' - two in Leicester (Criterion/Swan & Rushes) and one on Groby (Stamford Arms), which is just on the outskirts. All Mojo Hand.

I'm going to work on a new style poster for the band - something that will look good regardless of whether its printed on a high volume press or a photocopier. Not that he's left-handed but I always prefer the bassist to stand on my left. He'll part of the Mojo Hand rhythm section, one of the strongest in town. His solid bass lines could allow me room to stretch out and express myself, but actually it does the opposite. I like to stick to him like glue and keep my drumming in the pocket. Anything else is a distraction. Its the same when I play with Al Sansome in the Blues Demons. His philosophy is find a bass line and play it over and over. Works for me. Showboating is out of place, groove is everything. And that groove is whatever pattern/style makes the music move. From a rock beat to a shuffle to a looser form like a rhumba, the music must feel good.
Its not enough to just have good bass and drums, the rhythm guitar has to be top notch too. In fact, all three instruments must lock together, the bass with the bass drum and the guitar with the snare and hi-hat. A rhythm section with a great rhythm guitarist rules. I'd prefer a great rhythm player who is an average soloist over some one who is just a soloist. Fortunately Al Sansome excels at both rhythm and soloing - not many guitarists can, they all want to be soloists. Mojo has it all in spades.

Signing Off

The first and last time I heard Signing Off by UB40 was in 1985. A college mate gave me a copy of the lp and I played it 'til the tape broke. Why I haven't picked up a copy 'til now is anyones guess. The cd sounds as fresh now as it did then. Harder edged than the whimpy Labour of Love series, Signing Off is astonishingly high quality. As well as top rankin' performances from all instrumentalists, Jim Brown's drums are outstanding - pile-driving grooves and titanic rolls around the concert toms.
