How to Create a Groove

One of my students, Richard, asked me what play to back up a calypso carol. I replied that there are all sorts of rythms that can be used, and that listening to the music would inform the feel. The trick was to settle on a pattern and play it consistently with authority. That way would create a strong foundation, or groove. As long at the subdivision didn't clash with or disrupt the flow of the song any beat, from rock to authentic calypso, would do the job. Its more about having confidence.
